Pahanthudawa Falls is formed from Belihuloya. Pahana is the Sinhala word for lamp. ("Oya" is the Sinhala meaning for river). Pahanthudawa Falls is another waterfall that beautifies the environment and also Sri Lanka. It is located in the Ratnapura District of the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. ("Pahanthudawa looks like a lamp.")

Belihuloya

Belihuloya is a village located in the Ratnapura District of the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. It is located 150 km (93 miles) southeast of Colombo. It is located at an altitude of 616 meters (2021 feet) above sea level. This mountainous region is a climatically transitional region that connects the dry and wet zones as well as the mountains and lowlands. The name Belihuloya is derived from the Belioya which flows through the area. Also, this stream starts from the top of the hill called Hawagala.



Road to Pahanthudawa Falls


Famous Belihuloya Rest House on Colombo - Badulla Road. After about 2km on the nearby road, you will come across a sign saying Pahanthudawa Falls. Going down from there you will find several houses and your vehicles can be parked there. From there you will find a ticket counter on foot and have to get a ticket and go down the stairs.


On the way from there you will come across the stream flowing from Pahanthudawa Falls. After about 200m along the stream you can reach Pahanthudawa near the waterfall.


There really is a strange beauty in that waterfall. Pahanthudawa is the name given to this waterfall which is a masterpiece of natural beauty. The water pool at the bottom of the waterfall is naturally located in the shape of a lamp. It also shows the nature of the waterfall lamp flame. The height of this waterfall is 5m.


Risky

Do not go into the water there. The reason is that this place is a high risk place. Several lives have already been lost in the area. The main water pool associated with this waterfall is very deep and not suitable for bathing at all. During the rainy season, there is a risk of sudden increase in water and slippage can also occur.

 

Things to see in the Belihuloya area


In addition to this waterfall also known as Pahanthuda Falls or Galagama Falls, there are many other waterfalls in this area. They are


1. Bambarakanda Falls (also known as Bambarakele Falls) is the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It is 263 meters (863 feet) high. It is also the 299th tallest waterfall in the world. Bambarakanda Falls is located 18 km (11 miles) from Belihuloya.


2. Pet Falls - It's not really a waterfall but a waterfall. It is located on the eastern slope of the Ellamana Hills and slides about 20 meters along the rock wall, forming a water slip. This pet waterfall is located at a distance of 8 km (5.0 miles) from Belihuloya.


3. Brampton Falls - This is a tributary of the Welioya River. It flows down the eastern slope (1530 m) of Papulagala mountain. There are also several waterfalls that make up the trees in the surrounding monsoon forest. This Brampton Falls is approximately 6 meters (20 feet) high. It is also located among several other small waterfalls. Brampton Falls is located 10 km (6.2 miles) from Belihuloya.


4. Papulagala Falls - Located on the Bramton Estate (Tea Plantation) on the slope of Papulagala Mountain. This waterfall is formed during the rainy season and is about 30 meters (98 feet) high. It is located about 5 km (3.1 miles) east of Belihuoya in Heeraluwa.


5. Hirikatuwa Oya is located 4 km (2.5 miles) from Belihuloya. This place is a popular bathing spot among many people. Parking is also available, and many people prefer to bathe in the cold misty mountain water.


6. Samanala Dam is the second largest hydropower project in Sri Lanka. It generates 405 gigawatts of power annually. Samanala Dam is located 9.4 km (5.8 miles) south of Belihuloya.
